SLOW DOWN WHEN DRIVING IN WINTER CONDITIONS.

Safety Tips

Most fires are preventable. By following basic fire safety practices and staying aware of common hazards, you can significantly reduce the risk of fire in your home or business. Baldwin Fire Rescue has compiled these essential safety tips to help protect what matters most to you.

Cooking Safety

Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires

Key Rule: Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop. Never leave cooking unattended.

DO:

  • Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling
  • Stay in the home while simmering, baking, or roasting
  • Check food regularly when cooking
  • Use a timer as a reminder
  • Keep kids and pets at least 3 feet from the stove
  • Wear short or tight-fitting sleeves
  • Keep oven mitts, wooden utensils, and towels away from burners
  • Clean up spills and grease immediately
  • Turn pot handles inward so they don’t get knocked over
  • Have a lid nearby to smother grease fires

DON’T:

  • Never leave cooking unattended
  • Don’t cook if you’re drowsy or have been drinking
  • Don’t wear loose clothing near the stove
  • Don’t overfill pots or use damaged cookware
  • Never use water on a grease fire

If You Have a Cooking Fire:

For a small pan fire:

  1. Slide a lid over the pan
  2. Turn off the burner
  3. Leave the lid on until completely cool
  4. NEVER move the pan

For an oven fire:

  1. Turn off the oven
  2. Keep the door closed
  3. Let the fire smother itself

If the fire won’t go out:

  1. GET OUT
  2. Close the door behind you
  3. Call 911 from outside

Heating Safety

Heating equipment is a leading cause of winter fires

Space Heaters

  • Keep 3-foot safety zone around all heaters
  • Never leave space heaters unattended
  • Turn off when leaving room or going to bed
  • Plug directly into wall outlet (no extension cords)

  • Maintain 3-foot clearance from combustibles

Clothes Dryers

  • Clean lint trap after every load
  • Clean dryer vent annually
  • Inspect vent hose for damage
  • Never dry items with foam, rubber, or plastic
  • Don’t overload the dryer
